A select group of young goalkeepers from Dubai’s football clubs had the opportunity of a lifetime this weekend, attending a workshop supervised by Ricard Segarra, the goalkeeping co-ordinator at Spanish powerhouses FC Barcelona.
Organised by Dubai Sports Council (DSC) under its “Future Goalkeepers” programme, the three-day workshop saw ten goalkeepers, aged 13 to 15, from Dubai clubs Al Nasr, Al Wasl, Shabab Al Ahli Dubai and Hatta get lessons on the finer points of goalkeeping from Segarra. “This Future Goalkeepers programme, launched in 2012, is an investment into our future as a footballing nation,” said Ali Omar Al Balooshi, the Director of Sports Development at DSC.
“The aim of the programme is to create players, who will keep flying the UAE flag high on the international stage and meet our footballing aspirations.” Ahmed Salem Al Mahri, Manager of Sports Academies in DSC, added: “This workshop provided was a great opportunity for our young goalkeepers to train under the supervision of the goalkeeping co-ordinator of one of the biggest clubs in the world. Some of the world’s best goalkeepers have graduated through Mr Ricard Segarra’s watch.
“The development of these budding young talents – the future generation of the country’s football players – is one of the main focus of Dubai Sports Council, and the Future Goalkeepers programme is one of the initiatives under this plan. “We are fully aware that taking care of our talents is the foundation of our sporting success and key to our excellence in the future.”
